Pardon me looking doofy. As usual. :P

Curious... what is everyone's favorite soap smell?

For some reason, I'm partial to the liquid soap that's in the bathroom stalls on Air Canada flights. LOL I know... I think it's something tropical, but it smells so good.

Ending the night with ice cream and a glass of wine? Awesome.

Although somehow it's going to be past 11 by the time I get to bed - again! BOO.

Also random from cleaning... does anyone on my FL collect Beanie Babies (or know someone who does)? I found a robin (Early the robin) and two little ones (possibly from McD's - Claude the Crab and Chip the cat) that are still in great shape with their tags (unbent, surprisingly!). I have pics if required. I just don't think they'd sell on ebay, so if someone wants them, all you have to do is cover shipping. If no one wants them, they're going to the second hand store this weekend.

I actually had trouble choosing which picture to use today! haha

And now, off to bed, because I'm tired and deserve 6+ hrs of sleep. Long day tomorrow (8 patients).

Bonus picture because it's pretty and I know at least one person my FL likes flower pictures:

These guys were fighting, which surprised me. The weapons were not foam, and they seemed somewhat serious about it, though no one got hurt.

According to their website, it was their annual tournament.

Their FAQ has an amusing (possible) typo:

No. We occasionally hire performers that are members of the SCA for our feasts.

This pic is from the station at Old Strathcona. It's way closer than I wanted; the streetcar really snuck up on me faster than I expected.

The streetcar is actually from Melbourne, Australia. It's one of two that left the country. The line and the cars are managed by a volunteer railway association, and they talk about little historical tidbits on the ride (only about 15 mins or less, as it's only 3 km).

Very random update pertaining to nothing much at all.

Looked up Transformers on IMDB because mom had some questions about it, and I read more about Peter Cullen (the voice of Optimus). Turns out he's Canadian (from Montreal), so now I'm claiming Optimus as a Canuck just for kicks. And he's also the voice of Eeyore, which I feel silly for not recognizing, and now mentally I'm imagining a depressed Optimus sounding much like Eeyore and it's got me giggling.

Also Transformers related, saw a Jeep with "autobot" written across the back window at the top, and an autobots logo on the side windows. I took a picture but haven't uploaded it yet; there's a pretty bad storm out right now and it caused a power outage. The wind is crazy, and there's a ton of rain, but it's pretty light out, so it probably won't last that long.

I need some sort of Transformers icon.

And I'm kinda surprised mom wanted to watch Transformers in the first place. Not really her type of movie.

I think I should have a nap; I was tired. But now I'm hyped a bit because Transformers is on and want to keep watching.

Totally unrelated highlights of the day: speaking to two patients, dictating my first letter, having a good drive home, appetizers with mom and being super full, and a phone call from Andy, who I haven't seen since Japan! We made plans to meet up on the 12th, so I'm super excited. :)

It's quite flavorful. I can only describe it as "interesting". The flavors don't blend together for one taste, they kind of cycle through the ingredients and leave an interesting aftertaste. It's fairly rich, in a way; I couldn't eat a lot at once. Probably an acquired taste.

It contains: starch, eggs, sugar, water, ghee, saffron, cardamom, nuts and rose water.

A website with more info about Omani Halwa.

I also took a pic of the box; maybe I'll upload it later.

Okay, uploaded a pic of the cover of the box.

When driving home, I saw a little bit of a second rainbow starting, but turns out I could only see it with my sunglasses on. I think it's because they do something with the light.

Anyway, very cool rainbow, and I haven't seen one in ages. Too bad there was no pot of gold at the end or anything. I could have used it to pay tuition. XD This photo makes it look like the end is a gas station. XD

Sorry for the ugly parking lot. That's just where I was.

Totally apropos question! I just got back from watching Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.

And I totally liked it. Just about as much as the first. My first thoughts other than "yay Transformers!" was "I'LL GET YOU NEXT TIME, GADGET!"

I'd admit that I went in with pretty much no expectations except for explosions and some characters from the first one, so it definitely met and exceeded those. XD

Somewhat predictably, [info]stripedpetunia and I were the only ones laughing at times. Everyone else seemed either too old or too young to have seen the cartoon.

My Random Thoughts - Spoilers, if you haven't seen the movie )

There was a lot more I found funny and amusing, but I just can't remember specific lines or anything right now.

I'm sure I'll have more to say later. I want to watch it again to pick up on things I missed the first time around, but won't pay to see it in the theatre. I definitely want to own it, though.

Oh, and why Inspector Gadget reference? The decepticon that integrated with the satellite was Dr. Claw's voice. XD Made me LOL every time he spoke. I still laugh thinking about it.

*Tatakae! Chô robot seimeitai Transformer (Japanese title of the cartoon). I suppose it could be "super robot transformer life-form", but I just kept the words in order. I think "super transformer robot life-form" would be best...but not as amusing.

Anyway, this is where I spend my days when I'm at rotation. Being in a new hospital is a treat! I'm lucky that everyone is lovely, too.

Tomorrow, lunch out and Transformers. I wanted to wear a skirt, but I heard it's only supposed to be 18C. Ugh. So I probably won't, because I'd freeze in the theatre or something.

I really need to post something else, but meh. All you get is a photo. And perhaps a small bit of babble if you're lucky.

And my thing of putting charms on my phone continued after I returned from Japan. The CC Lemon bottle (not surprisingly, a fizzy lemon flavored drink) is from Japan (the liquid in it actually moves - there's bubbles - and I had no idea it did that until I got stopped once at security when flying); the black and white cat is from a Summer Festival at the Japanese Canadian Culture Center in Toronto, and the purple girly drop thing was from a gashopon cupcake from a cupcake shop in Denver, CO (which was awesome). Lots of memories from that one; it reminds me of Lolorado and awesome peeps.

Keitai is "cell phone" in Japanese. I still usually think of "keitai" first when I think of cell phones. And it's been 3 years since I've been in Japan. Lame~~

Also, I cannot tell if the comment wanting to add it to some group is facetious or not. I was still editing the description when it got that comment...

I need to work, but cannot motivate myself. Blah. CowTown dad is watching WWF or whatever on TV down here, and I really should be working, but I just wanna read. >.< I think I'll write another progress note (that takes about 45 minutes), read about a disorder, then go to bed. By 10. Because I want more sleep.

Weekend Stuffs

I am really enjoying my weekends with my mom. Sleeping without an alarm, having company, driving around and shopping and eating yummy foods.

This past weekend we ran some errands (finally changed the car registration to my name, so now I can sell it, even though it doesn't run any more, yay), stopped at MEC where I bought some skirts for work (thanks for the tip, [info]mints4friends), and M&M meat shops where we bought mini quiche and chicken breasts for meals. Oh, and Costco, for socks and fruit platters, where I sampled stuff and it was tasty. ;)

Today I went through 2 boxes from the move, and got rid of stuff, so that was good. Helped mom put stuff up in the attic. More boxes next weekend. The goal is to go through all of it before I am done rotation. Found a few things I want to save, but managed to get rid of a bit, too (why was I saving notes from junior high?). Recycled a lot.

Then left early to come to CowTown to see UP with [info]stripedpetunia, which turned out to be in 3D, which was a lot of fun! We seemed to be the only ones laughing in the nearly empty theatre. Didn't bother us. It was cute, and of course I shed a few tears. We're going to see Transformers: ROTFlcopters on Wednesday. Should be fun as I have no expectations. I think [info]nessun summed it up best for me when she commented: "Tons of fun all around, which is all I can really expect from a film based on toys with no canon plotline apart from "Optimus must turn into a truck". " Yay Convoy! (though I admit that whomever thought up Optimus Prime did a better job than their Japanese counterparts with Convoy, which would sound like "conboy" with the mixed up b & v...)

And today's picture: FOODS. I'm sure none of you are surprised, given my penchant for taking pictures of food.

This is a pic of the new Rainbow Park. The old one was quite dilapidated so it's nice to see an update. I played on it and swung on the swings and jumped off and pretended I was little again. Mom joined me; I think that was my favorite part. :)

I gotta say, I'm getting totally spoiled here. Coming home to dinner made, getting leftovers in my lunches, and having yummy smokies with fries and beans and being told to grab a drink (meaning alcoholic) from the fridge and chillin' while eating outside on the deck with my hosts.

Tomorrow is Friday! Then I get to go home and run errands all weekend and work at home, too. I don't know when I'm going to get all this stuff done!

Time to work on the LOI and prep for cases tomorrow. Started watching Season 2 of Dexter. I don't like Lila. But I still find Dex amusing!

Next week is the start of the Stampede! Should be fun!

I walk past this door to get to my rotation bedroom.

I realized I'm not writing about rotation any more, or doing my grateful 5. I can say that rotation is going great; I really like it there. And really liking it is great for my mood. And getting to spend time with my mom last weekend, and doing some much needed shopping, and socializing here and stuff, just makes me feel good. I haven't had to focus on the "good" things; it's just been a happy past couple of days (despite being sick and not sleeping well and feeling exhausted). I really needed this kind of feeling!

I have a lot to do tonight; patient letter, physician letter, and 6 progress notes. Wait, make that 8; i have two from yesterday. >.< But I'll do what I can, and I'll work on more tomorrow, as I won't have patients tomorrow (maybe one). I've got 2 patients on Friday, though, and they're my "own" (i.e. my supervisor isn't really doing anything for them) so I've got to work on that, too, and make some phone calls related to that.

Should be okay, though, cuz I like the people I'm there with, and that makes a huge difference.

Time to work!

Also, I just realized that if I tack on one more day to my 6 weeks, I'll have 40 days of photos, so that's my goal.

A friend of mine challenged me to take a picture daily and share it. Let's see how long this goes! As I'm a week behind, here's the first week. It's for the duration of my rotation. Pictures aren't necessarily good and are most likely to be mundane. But it's pictures, and those can be fun.

Cut for your sanity, as they're not resized.

Pictures below with descriptions are on Flickr in the "Daily" Photo set here.

The First Week in Pictures )

I tried to work on my thesis stuff (it's actually very interesting), and to fill out an application form for a rotation, but I'm having trouble explaining why I am interested in it. I hope it comes to me soon!

I'm really looking forward to dinner; gnocci with spinach in alfredo sauce. Noms!

Of Dads and Other Things

  • Jun. 21st, 2009 at 8:51 PM
art: oriental fantasy thinking
Today is my first Father's Day with out dad.

It's not like he was around all that much before, but at least while he was alive there was still that hope that things would eventually work out and he'd kick the addiction to alcohol and we could actually have a real relationship and I'd have a dad again. But now, that opportunity is gone, and I've got other issues to deal with.

When picking out a card for Sunil to give to his dad, I teared up and got weepy in the Hallmark. We had our problems; I had issues (still do). But nonetheless, I'd still send Father's day cards (or e-cards). Or started to, a few years ago, after a few years of silence. You can read about my 'coming around' here in an old entry. It was spurred by some PostSecret postcards a few years ago. The first still holds true. The second - well, I'm still working on that forgiveness thing. It really doesn't come easy.

I wish I had a favorite fond memory; I'm having trouble thinking of the good things, as they were so long ago, and my memories have been colored by the divorce and issues since.

Oh well.

At some point, I mean to post about Rotation Day 5 and my shopping spree today (yay! new clothes and shoes that I desperately needed!). Maybe tomorrow.

Did I do enough work on my thesis today? Um... nope. >.< Good thing mom's not home tomorrow, so I can work on that all day and really focus. We just haven't spent any real time together in nearly a year, so that was really nice to do. Just means some late nights for me as I finish patient letters, physician letters, progress notes, and work on thesis stuff... >.<

I have had a lot of delicious tea today, though. Green loose leaf, and some lovely loose-leaf called White Peony that I bought yesterday in a sample pack, the perfect size.

(I didn't skip a day, just didn't title yesterday as day 3, as there was more in that post...)

  • Sat in on another positive result for a cancer syndrome. Different one - breast cancer - and the person took it very well. I think there's a difference between having FAP and a risk for breast cancer. I'd rather have the BRCA risk, personally.
  • Worked on more pedigrees with Progeny.
  • Prepped a bit for tomorrow's patients. I am nervous! I still have to talk to myself to review.
  • Someone had brought in Timbits and chocolate bars, so I had some as a snack.
  • Ate lunch outside, which was nice!
  • Security was on lunch from 12-3:15 (you read that right) - and they closed at 3:30. So I didn't get a chance to have them make my badge open doors.
  • Was asked to prep more charts for next week. This is kinda feeling like work study at the same time, but it's good practice and I have to be there anyway!
  • Called another clinic to see if we could get a copy of their pedigree. I was nervous, but did well enough. So here's hoping they have a pedigree to send!
  • Awesome lightning storm as I left the hospital. I missed Alberta lightning storms! Huge raindrops. It was really cool.

Got back, ate (pizza!) and found more papers for my thesis. Good thing, too, as they used quantitative methods, which I'd prefer (faster and easier to number crunch), so they were fairly informative. Emailed my thesis advisor and hope to talk to her tomorrow. This weekend = LOI weekend so I can send it to her Monday. Need a copy in by Friday the 26th.

Also, I've decided that in order to make stuff possibly more exciting, I'm going to try to post a picture a day. Something from CowTown. A picture I took myself. Photodump this weekend to fill in the week; it'll be messy rooms and stuff. At least they'll look lived in, I guess! They won't be artsy photos or anything. I can promise mundane-ness. XD

I can't decide if I should pack up and leave for home right after rotations, or come to my CowTown home first and let the rush hour traffic dissipate, and then leave. I don't have a ton to pack up (for 22kg suitcase, I really don't have much clothing here... o.O), so that's not much of an issue.

Grateful
1. That the big drops didn't start falling until after I got in the car.
2. For eating lunch outside in the sun.
3. For getting Timbits and chocolates as a snack when I was hungry.
4. Coming home to foods!
5. That I made some progress on thesis stuff, even if it's just paper reading and brainstorming. I'd like to print out the papers; I can probably do that tomorrow.

I do not think I'll have time to do a lot of the things I thought I'd have time for while at rotations! It's super busy and very tiring. I wish I could relax on the weekend instead of work on thesis, but it'll work out in the end. My fault for getting a late start anyway.

Tired, but not sleepy, and again, I don't feel like reading (despite having a good book) or watching stuff on the computer. What's wrong with me?

And when did it get to be nearly 10pm? Gah.
